5 Signs It's Time to Replace Your Dog's Bed

Dogs spend roughly half the day asleep, so their bed matters more than most of us think. Beds wear out slowly, which makes it easy to miss the moment a bed stops doing its job. Here are five signs it's time for a replacement.

1. The filling has gone flat
Press your hand into the middle of the bed. If you can feel the floor, there is no cushioning left. A flat bed gives little support for hips, elbows and shoulders.
2. It smells even after washing
Odors that return right after a wash usually mean dirt and oils have soaked into the filling. A bed your dog can't keep fresh is worth replacing.
3. Your dog sleeps next to it, not on it
If your dog keeps choosing the cold floor or the sofa, the bed may be too small, too hot or no longer comfortable. Dogs are usually good at telling you what they prefer.
4. The fabric is chewed or torn
Loose stuffing can be a hazard if swallowed. Once the cover is damaged, it's safest to retire the bed.
5. Your dog is slower to get up
Older dogs often need a supportive surface. If your dog seems stiff or is limping, talk to your vet, since a bed can add comfort but isn't a treatment.
What to look for in a new bed
- Size: your dog should be able to stretch out fully, not just curl up.
- Easy cleaning: look for a washable cover and a waterproof liner to protect the filling.
- Tough fabric: choose durable material if your dog likes to scratch or dig before lying down.
