Catnip vs. Silver Vine: What's the Difference?

If your cat shows no interest in catnip, you may have wondered if something is wrong. The answer is usually no. Not all cats respond to catnip, and there are other plants that can work instead.

What is catnip?
Catnip is a plant in the mint family. Many cats become playful, rub against it or roll around when they smell it. The effect typically lasts only a few minutes. Reaction to catnip is inherited, so some cats never respond, and kittens usually don't react until they are a few months old.
What is silver vine?
Silver vine is a plant that also triggers play and rubbing in many cats. Some cats that ignore catnip enjoy silver vine, which is why the two are often sold together.
Is it safe?
Both are generally considered safe for cats in small amounts. Offering them occasionally, rather than all the time, keeps them interesting. Watch your cat while they play with a new toy.
How to use them
- Offer a new scent in short sessions so your cat doesn't lose interest.
- Choose toys that can be licked, scratched or batted.
- Store toys in a sealed container to keep them fresh.
If you'd like to try both, our Catnip & Silver Vine Wall Ball combines the two scents in a rotating ball that sticks to a wall.
