How to Help Your Cat Drink More Water

Cats evolved in dry climates and often don't feel a strong urge to drink. That can be a problem, especially for cats eating dry food, which contains much less moisture than wet food. These simple habits can encourage your cat to drink more.

Offer fresh water more often
Change the water at least once a day. Many cats ignore water that has sat out or picked up dust and hair.
Try a wider, shallower bowl
Some cats dislike their whiskers touching the sides of a deep bowl. A wide, shallow dish can make drinking more comfortable.
Place water away from food and the litter box
Cats often prefer water that is separate from where they eat. Try putting a few bowls in different rooms.
Consider running water
Many cats are drawn to moving water. A fountain or a gravity-fed water station keeps water circulating and can make it more interesting.
Add moisture to meals
Adding wet food or a little water to meals is another easy way to increase fluid intake.
When to call the vet
If your cat suddenly drinks much more or much less than usual, or seems tired or unwell, contact your vet. Changes in thirst can be a sign of a health problem.
