How to Keep Your Cat or Dog Warm and Comfortable in Cold Weather

When temperatures drop, your pet feels it too. Short-haired, small, very young and older animals are especially sensitive to cold. Here are practical ways to keep them comfortable.
Choose the right sleeping spot
Keep beds away from drafts, cold floors and exterior doors. Raising a bed slightly off the ground or adding a thick layer underneath helps block cold from the floor.
Add a warming layer
Soft blankets are great. A self-warming mat uses a reflective layer to hold your pet's own body heat, so it needs no power or cord.

Let cats burrow
Many cats love enclosed, soft spaces in cold weather. Cave beds and tunnel beds let them curl up and keep warm.

Keep walks short and dry
On very cold days, shorten walks and dry your dog's paws and belly when you come in, especially if there is snow, ice or de-icing salt outside.
Watch for signs they are too cold
Shivering, lifting paws, seeking heat sources or curling very tightly can mean your pet is cold. If you are worried, bring them inside and warm them gradually.
Keep heat sources safe
Keep pets away from direct contact with heaters and fires, and avoid electric blankets unless made for pets.
